Personal Connection
Throughout my career in healthcare, as a clinical researcher, nuclear medicine administrative specialist, radiology receptionist, healthcare event coordinator, and certified nursing assistant, I have had the opportunity to see the patient experience from different perspectives. These roles have allowed me to interact with patients and with the families and caregivers who support them through one of the most challenging moments of their lives.
Healthcare is often focused on diagnoses, treatments, procedures, and clinical outcomes. While these are crucial, my experiences have taught me that healing extends beyond medical care. Some of the most meaningful moments I have witnessed were not tied to major clinical milestones. There is no greater joy than hearing that a treatment was successful or that a patient has been cured, and I often observed that the smiles, laughter, and moments of relief shared by patients and their families came from something much simpler: a thoughtful gift, a comforting item, or a small act of kindness.
These gifts were never cures or financial aid. They were small comforts that brought a sense of normalcy, hope, and encouragement. A toy that brightened a child’s day, a comfort item that eased anxiety, or a practical necessity that relieved stress for a parent or caregiver.
I have always been proud to be part of a system that makes a significant difference. Yet it was through these experiences that I came to appreciate the profound impact small comforting gifts can have. They may seem simple, but they often provide emotional support when it is needed most.
As I became more aware of patient needs, I observed a gap in charitable donations. While many organizations generously provide toys and entertainment, essential medical and comfort-related supplies are often overlooked. Families frequently rely on gauze, sanitizer wipes, antibacterial wipes, diapers, socks, pacifiers, and changes of clothing, yet these necessities are not always readily available.
Recognizing this need inspired my significant other, Bena Chen, and me to found Lounging Penguin Organization. Our mission is rooted in the belief that small comforts can make a meaningful difference. By helping provide essential supplies, comfort goods, and practical support, we aim to ease some of the burdens families face and remind them that they are not alone.
